Jennifer DePaul, of the Eastern Paralyzed Veterans Association was the featured speaker.  Ms. DePaul indicated that individuals who violate provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act can be personally fined.  She gave one example where officials gave a building permit despite the fact that the building did not have elevator access.  The officials and the owner were personally fined and the court ordered the building retrofitted with an elevator - at the owner's expense.  She also said that putting in additional barriers (such as adding furniture to a library that would make it less accessible) was also a violation of the law.  She explained each section of the law and told ADA Committee members where they could go for help if they believed the law was being violated.

EPILOGUE:  After the meeting, the ADA Committee member who was trapped in the aclove, had to wait until someone was found with a key to open to door so he could get out.  Several of those present suggested that we dial 911 and have the Milford Volunteer Fire Deparment come and rescue him.  Fortunately, someone was found with a key and he was successfully in getting out of the building.
