Time Herald-Record - May 4, 1999 Repost Permission Requested - 3/04/03 'Tom Quick Indian Slayer' loses his monument The Milford Borough Council decided not to go ahead with re-erecting the vandalized Tom Quick Monument at its council meeting last night. Borough President Matthew Osterberg said that for now, re-erecting the 110-year-old monument is a dead issue. "We really don't know what to do at this point," Osterberg said. As the son of the first European settler in Milford, Quick is looked upon as a hero. Legend has it, though, that the 18th-century Pike County resident murdered 99 Indians. An inscription on the 9-foot-tall Washington Monument-like structure, mostly zinc, reads: "Tom Quick Indian Slayer." The borough had planned to re-erect the monument, which sustained $12,000 in damages from a sledgehammer, this August. But a planned July protest by a local Native American organization gave officials pause. The statue, which is currently in storage, was re-cast in bronze. For now, it will remain in storage. "We want to see what comes down the road," Osterberg said. – A. Tacuma Roeback Copyright May, 1999 All Rights Reserved |
